Model of a side tank steam locomotive made by C.A. Cardew

This freelance model of a side tank steam locomotive was made by the prominent New South Wales Government Railways' engineer, Cornelius (Con) Ambrose Cardew (1897-1973). Cardew introduced some major modifications to steam locomotives in New South Wales during the first half of the twentieth century. Cardew was associated with the Museum over a number of years from 1955 when arrangements were made to have Locomotive No.1 removed from its Harris Street engine house behind the old Technological Museum to a plinth at Central Railway for the centenary of the railways in NSW. He also rode on the footplate with Norm Harwood, the Keeper of Exhibits, when Locomotive 1243 made its last journey from the Railways to the Museum. Locomotive model, steam, side tank, 4-4-2, freelance model, 2½ inch gauge, made by Cornelius (Con) Ambrose Cardew, in Sydney, former Assistant Chief Mechanical Engineer, New South Wales Government Railways, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, 1917-1973 It represents a freelance side tank steam locomotive of 2½ inch gauge with wheel configuration 4-4-2. The model comes with its own section of 25¼ inch (64 cm) track, as well as a miniature oil can 4¼ inches (11 cm) high, a shovel 5¾ inches (14.5 cm), a grid 3½ inches (8.5 cm), crank 2¾ inches (7 cm) and a wooden carry case for the model.

This locomotive model was made by Cornelius (Con) Ambrose Cardew former Testing Engineer and later Assistant Chief Mechanical Engineer for the New South Wales Government Railways to the end of the 1960s. Cardew was born in the inner west of Sydney in 1897, the son of a prominent Sydney engineer. He began a lifetime love of steam locomotives as a boy, photographing engines on the Strathfield line in Sydney. After leaving the King's School, Parramatta, he began work at the Eveleigh workshops cleaning engines and completed a term as a fireman. In 1917 he secured an engineering apprenticeship at Eveleigh and after spending two years at the University of Sydney he returned to the Mechanical Engineers branch where, under the direction of the Chief Mechanical Engineer, E.E. Lucy, he graduated from the drawing office to Test Engineer. Over the years Cardew worked at introducing some major modifications to steam locomotives used in New South Wales. He died in 1973.

The model was donated to the Museum in 1967 by Con Cardew's sister, Miss G.M.A. Cardew of Wahroonga, NSW.
