PRODUCTION
Notes
This locomotive model was made by the mechanical engineer and inventor Sir George Alfred Julius, probably in 1932. In an interview (object 2001/93/1-12) about his father, Awdry Julius recounted that George began using Meccano to make model trains when the family moved to Sydney. When the family moved into a large house in Darling Point in 1914 or 1915, George set up a very well appointed workshop in the backyard and was able to make more sophisticated models. Awdry developed an interest in engineering through closely observing his father, who encouraged this by challenging his son to work out what tool would be needed next.
HISTORY
Notes
The locomotive model was donated to the Museum by Sir George's son, Awdry Francis Julius in 1954. The model was sent for display at the Broken Hill Branch Museum of the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences in late 1959.
