Physical Description

Evening dress, silk / mixed materials, House of Worth, Paris, France, c. 1900 Evening gown consisting of boned bodice with short sleeves and a floor length skirt with train. Gown is made from cream silk satin self-striped in cut velvet, embossed with large floral motifs in shades of cream, pink and green, also in cut velvet. Short sleeved bodice with square neckline and pointed waist at centre front. The bodice is trimmed with tulle, lace and an artificial flower, possibly a carnation, of pink and mauve with a green stem and leaves, at the left breast. Lace sleeves fall to the elbow and are decorated with a vertical line of rhinestones down outer upper arm. Bodice is boned with internal sweat pads under arms. Sweat pads have no makers mark or patent number printed on them. Inside bodice is an internal band embroidered with designers name at waist, fastening at centre back with a metal hook and eye. Bodice fastens down centre back in a V shape with eyelets and lacing, and a metal hook and eye at both the top and bottom of opening. Matching floor length skirt with train, gathering at the back and sides of waist, with a flat front. Centre back opening at waist fastens with a ribbon, six metal hooks, three metal eyes and three thread eyes.
