Wedding outfit from England
Object No. A8684
Many women in the 1800s couldn't afford the luxury of a one-off wedding dress and would instead wear their best dress for the ceremony which could be worn for Sunday best and formal occasions. This outfit appears to have been made specially for a wedding, however it is designed with two bodice options and could later be worn for day or evening wear. Dresses at this time were often designed to be adaptable with removable trains and two sets of sleeves. In this way they could be worn on many occasions.
