Mens court coat from Europe

Object No. A8676

This silk grosgrain and linen-lined court coat was made between 1770 and 1790. It would have been worn with an embroidered waistcoat, silk breeches, white silk stockings, ruffled linen shirt, cravat and a black wool-felt bicorne hat. The Rococo period represented the final era of colourful, opulent clothing for men. Throughout Europe, exquisite silk embroidery depicting naturalistic plants and flowers was worked on men's silk and velvet garments.
