Mens smoking cap

This object is part of the Royal Australian Historical Society (RAHS) collection which was donated to the Powerhouse Museum in 1981. The Society was formed in 1901 and is the oldest historical society in Australia. As a result many of the objects they collected are of great significance to Australia and to New South Wales. Some are associated with people and families like the Marsdens, Henry Parkes, Mawson, and John Verge. Others like the convict handcuffs and the Ben Hall 'Wanted' poster aresignificant relics from Australia's past. The importance of the entire collection and the way in which it was acquired adds to the significance of this object.

Object Statement

Smoking cap, mens, textile / cotton / silk, maker unknown, Australia / England, c. 1860

Physical Description

Black velvet smoking cap with flat crown decorated by a button covered in silk thread and a tassel in pale blue, cream and orange thread. The exterior of the cap is silk embroidered with cream and tan floral motifs on the crown and sides. The interior of the cap is lined in dark red cotton.

This cap was made c.1860.

HISTORY

Notes

This cap was acquired by the Museum as part of the Royal Australian Historical Society Collection in 1981 (RAHS #338). It was displayed in the Mint Museum on Macquarie Street in the late 1980's. The cap belonged to a relative of Mrs Val Sheehan, perhaps her great great grandfather.
