Physical Description

Box, European beechwood/ metal, made by [Dr A H Feldstadt], from a design by Lucien Henry, Australia, c 1885. Rectangular box, hinged lid, lockable, in European beechwood, carved in relief. The four sides of the box are finely carved with foliate scrolls inside a fine rope moulded border. and surrounded by a simple concave moulding, the lower edges terminating in a stepped moulded base. The lid features a raised rectangular panel carved with a stylised lyrebird motif (similar to that at H3015-2), based on a design by Lucien Henry. The lyrebird is standing with tail extended over a banner inscribed with the text 'AUSTRALIA'. The whole panel is surrounded by a moulded border inside a wider foliate scroll carved border within a finely worked border of alternate circles and lozenges, the oter moulded edge extending beyond the lid underside. The front panel features an ivory escutcheon lozenge. The lid is affixed by bronze hinges and the box is locked by a metal key.

HISTORY

Notes

A similar lyrebird motif appears carved in sandstone on the Sydney Technical College building where Lucien Henry was appointed the first lecturer in art in 1884.
