Summary

Physical Description

Wax over composition head and shoulder plate. Cloth body stuffed with sawdust. Composition arms and legs. Head is finely coloured with painted eyebrows, painted closed mouth, blue glass eyes. Pierced ears with earring in right ear of drop purple glass and gilt. Arms are painted flesh coloured with separate thumbs. Legs are painted with cream stockings, red garters and black boots with orange trim. Doll is wearing original clothes consisting of short white cotton petticoat with longer white petticoat above; pale pink silk dress with bodice gathered into waist with vertical pleats, round neck and short elbow length sleeves. Skirt has wide pleats down centre front and is edged with fine row of lace above hem. Overskirt is also edged with lace and partially missing. Remnants of pink silk bonnet attached at neck. Replacement synthetic blond wig. Doll contained in cedar case. The back half of scalp has come away from head and is a separate piec

Notes

Since the doll's body is unmarked it is probably of German manufacture. The clothes suggest last quarter of the nineteenth century.
