Physical Description

A ewer vase made of bone china hand painted with an Australian floral motif design which rises from an inverted cone shaped foot with narrow top into a curved baluster shaped body which bends at the top sharply into horizontal shoulders surmounted by a narrow neck which flares out into a pronounced pouring lip, the edges of which are scrolled over. The handle is shaped with ornate scroll and leaf forms. The foot and shoulders bear an ornate red and gold floral decoration. Vase is signed by the artist. Base has makers marks.

This vase was probably designed by John Slater, modelled by Charles Noke and hand painted with Australian waratahs by Louis Bilton for Doulton & Co (Burslem works), Buslem, c 1892

HISTORY

Notes

This vase was possibly made for the World's Columbian Exposition at Chicago, United States of America, in 1892-1893. It was bequeathed to the museum in 1943 by John Shorther.
