Summary

Physical Description

A vase, made of wheel-thrown and moulded earthenware, with a tall, ovoid body, bearing a floral decoration. A stepped foot rises to a tall, ovoid body, surmounted by a narrow neck and wide, flaring rim. Moulded side handles in the shape of vine leaves and grapes extend from the body to the shoulder. The body is decorated on the obverse with mainly white flannel flowers, yellow wattle and green and mauve leaves. The reverse is decorated with mainly yellow wattle and green and mauve leaves. The painted decoration is set on an ivory background. The shoulder is decorated with a band of moulded gold scrolls, below which is a decoration of pearl enamel dots, suspended from fine raised gold chains. The base and neck are decorated with an elaborate design of moulded gold leaves and scrolls, pearl enamel rosettes and raised gold foliage and dots on an ivory background. The handles are painted in solid dull gold, the base and rim are edged in gold and the inside of the rim is decorated in clouded gold. Vase made for the World's Columbian Exposition at Chicago.
