Early 20th century cardcase from Germany

Object No. A1707

Today very rare, this piece was acquired by the Museum for its spectacular 'Australian flora in applied art ' exhibition of approximately 200 decorative arts objects both Australian made and commissioned overseas, predominantly in England, for the Australian market. The exhibition opened in 1906 and continued, with new objects being added throughout its duration, until the 1930s. This exhibition travelled to San Francisco as the Australian entrant in the Pacific International Exposition of 1915.

Cardcase, sterling silver / enamel / leather, maker unknown, Germany, 1912

Physical Description

Rectangular sterling silver cardcase has plain back, basse-taille enamelled front bearing painted enamelled Christmas bells. Single hinge along lengthways side, spring hook release, extended flange to facilitate opening. Interior has caramel coloured leather pouches for cards.

This case was exhibited by the Sydney Technological Museum at the Panama Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco 1915 as part of its exhibit on Australian Flora in Applied Art.
