The design was painted by Laurence Hotham Howie in Adelaide, South Australia. It features eucalypt flowers and intertwined leaves painted in Art Nouveau style. The vase is stamped D & D, France.
HISTORY
Notes
This vase was purchased by early museum Curator, Richard Baker when he visited Adelaide to lecture at the Arts and Crafts Society. He gave two lectures titled 'Australian Flora in Applied Art' and 'Our Natural Heritage, the Gum Tree'. The Australian artist, Hans Heyson, famous for painting gum trees was in the audience in July 1910. Baker was a passionate advocate for the use of Australia flora and fauna in art and craft. Reference: J Wrigley and M Fagg, Eucaplypts: a celebration, Allen & Unwin, Crows Nest, NSW, Australia, 2010. This vase was in 'Australian Flora in Art' at the Sydney Technologicaal Museum from 1910.
