Murano glass vase designed by Archimede Seguso for Vetreria Archimede Seguso
Object No. A10643
This is a blown glass vase in the 'Piume' series engraved with feathers designed by Archimede Seguso and made by Vetreria Archimede Seguso in Murano, Venice, Italy, in about 1955. The 1950s marked a high point in Italian design. Italian industrial design - with its iconic Vespa scooter - became 'hot' in Europe. Boldly coloured and high innovative glass and ceramics contributed greatly to 'organic modernism' in design, which was inspired by contemporary abstract sculpture and natural shapes, such as the atom and the cell, revealed under powerful new microscopes. Blown glass lent itself particularly well to the sensual shapes and long, flowing lines of 1950s modernism. Visually striking and almost magical in the way it is formed, post-war Venetian glass continues to challenge and inspire glassmakers around the world.
