Pair of mens shearing moccasins

Object No. 97/311/1

The genesis of these moccasins, colloquially referred to as ‘mocs’, evolved from Chris Musgrove’s hobby of leather work which led him to make improvements to the traditional shearer’s belt. Chris was a ‘gun’ shearer, a professional shearer who removes a fleece in two to three minutes or less without cutting or marking the sheep. Chris’ hobby led to a modification of the traditional shearer’s moccasins. He used to accidentally cut the laces on his moccasins especially when shearing lambs. He modified a pair of his own moccasins and other shearers liked the idea and wanted them. The flap over the top of the moccasins not only stops the cutting of laces but also stops the laces gumming up with lanolin so makes them easier to undo at the end of the day. These moccasins are made from synthetic felt. The traditional moccasins were made from wool bale caps, not leather, when wool bales were made from jute rather than the modern material used today. Chris started designing and manufacturing his moccasins around 1993. At the time, Chris and his wife Tammy Musgrove, spent the entire year travelling from Mildura to outback Queensland and New South Wales then back to Victoria and Tasmania. He and Tammy established Musgrove Supplies in 1993, later renamed as Musgrove Shearing Supplies in 1995 and incorporated as a company on 18 July 1997. The Musgrove’s company started in their caravan while travelling to mostly large outback shearing sheds. While Chris sheared, Tammy was wool handling and later became a wool classer. Since finishing shearing as a career, their manufacturing has been based in Mildura. In 2020, Chris and Tammy manufacture a range of moccasins with and without flaps along with other shearing accessories, all under the Gunrunner brand. PRODUCTION

Notes

This pair of moccasins was originally designed in 1993 and made in 1997 by Chris Musgrove of Musgrove Shearing Supplies while he was still full-time sheep shearing. Chris was a ‘gun’ shearer, a professional shearer who removes a fleece in two to three minutes or less without cutting or marking the sheep. This pair of moccasins was made for Milro Mail Order Co., a shearing supply company which was in business from 1956-2014. The logo ‘MILMOX’ was screen printed on this pair by request from Denis Ryan, the owner of Milro Mail Order Co. and the donor of these moccasins.

HISTORY

Notes

'Milro Mail Order Co. was the company of Denis Ryan and was the go to Shearing Supply Company from 1956. Located at 309 Sussex Street, Sydney. Closed 2014. It was very interesting to visit there. A lot of history and Denis had a lot of interesting stories. Chris Musgrove's grandfather, uncles and father all purchased from Milro during their years of shearing. As did Chris. Denis still had all the original hand written files of Chris’s grandfather etc. and could pull the card out of the file and tell you all the measurements and preferences of the size and style etc of the shearing dungarees any of them wore. Here is a short story from when Denis Ryan was inducted into the Shearers Hall of Fame: Denis Ryan (not related to fellow Inductee David Ryan) was born in Sydney in 1930. Drawing on his experiences, Denis was aware of the needs of the expedition shearers roaming Australia and New Zealand. He and his wife Fay pioneered the ‘Shearmaster’ brand and Milro Mail Order Co to address these needs. This business also enabled Denis to stay in touch with the shearing community. Once the Mecca of shearers, Milro closed its doors in 2014 after 58 years. It is a little known fact their iconic ‘Shearmaster’ clothing was part of the wardrobe of the film ‘Crocodile Dundee’.'
