Correlator chip, for the Australia Telescope, silicon/metal/paper, CSIRO Division of Radiophysics/Austek Microsystems, Australia, 1985. Computer chip containing 46,000 transistors on a thin slice of silicon 6.5 mm square. The silicon is housed in a 40 pin package. It can make 20 million calculations each second. In the Australia Telescope correlator, the chips are mounted on a correlator module housing 16 chips. Eight of these modules are placed side by side in a correlator block. There are at least 15 correlator blocks needed to combine the signals from all possible pairs of antennae.
