AEG Electric Kettle designed by Peter Behrens

Object No. 97/152/1

This kettle was designed by a leading early 20th century German architect and industrial designer, Peter Behrens in 1909 During the early years of the 20th century Peter Behrens established himself amongst the front rank of German designers who brought about the 'cultural reform movement' in Germany. This was in direct response to the critique of contemporary design standards. In 1907 he joined the giant electrical firm AEG and designed both electrical equipment and packaging. Behrens' appointment at AEG signified a new awareness of the importance of product appearance as a competitive weapon in world markets and his work was remarkable in its range and diversity. Most of his designs were in the functionalist tradition, some, like this kettle, revealed architectural references. Companies like AEG, by employing artists of the calibre of Behrens, filled the gap that existed in the late 19th century in Germany between progress in technical development and the search for appropriate visual style in the mass produced decorative arts.
