Summary
Physical Description
Moulded porcelain, hand painted and gilded, fired at a temperature of 1260 C, followed by two decorative fixing firings at 830 C. A deep, covered bowl, supported on a thick, hollow, cylindrical pedestal rests on a flat, circular foot. The lid has a high, rounded dome that rests on a flat base, the dome is surmounted by a tall, gold, metal knob. The bowl and lid are hand painted with bold, stylised leaf designs in matt colours of orange/ green/ blue/ purple/ pink/ black/ yellow on a gilded ground. The bowl interior and underside of the lid are painted white.

Designed by Heikki Orvola for Arabia, Finland. Part of Arabia's Pro Arte production line. Manufactured by Arabia Ceramic Factory, Finland, hand painted by Helena Murto. Designed as 'Kardinaali' bowl in 1987-8; manufactured in 1988 or 89.
HISTORY
Notes
The bowl was originally included in the design of a dinner set that never reached production. The model was then developed to produce a luxurious serving bowl. This bowl was donated by its manufacturer and is brand new. This piece was sent to the museum from Arabia, Finland.
