This portrait of Australian model Maggi Eckardt exudes an Eastern-inspired exotic fantasy look reflective of the late 1960s youth generation's new found freedom of expression. Eckardt wears self-styled make-up but her hairstyle was created by Xenon, a Double Bay stylist who later moved to the United States of America. The Museum also holds a silver gelatin photographic print of one negative from this David Mist series of Maggi Eckardt portraits (see 96/44/1-6/2/1).

Negatives (72), black and white, Maggi Eckardt, taken for the book 'Made in Australia', acetate film, David Mist, Sydney, 1969. 35mm film in 26 strips of two or three negatives. Neg 23 used in book on pages 20 - 21 shows Maggi Eckardt who was an international model at the time. Eckardt wears self styled make-up but her hair has been styled by Xenon (Zenon) a Double Bay stylist who later moved to the United States of America.

David Mist also worked with Eckardt in London. 'Talk about Flair', June 1968, p.62, features a paragraph about Zenon [also appears as Xenon?] (…. Born in Italy, Zenon trained with Vidal Sassoon in London and Antoine in Paris, … resident hairdresser for Channel 7 working on the Bramston Show, Beauty and the Beast, and for visiting personalities Shirley Bassey and Dusty Springfield'. Eckardt's distinctive features and striking make-up, including long black false eyelashes, made her one of Australia's most eye-catching models during the 1960s. As Robert Helpman wasn't available to officiate for the opening of the Sydney Opera House, Maggi noted that she 'christened the stage', leading the fashion parade onto the stage on opening night before the concert.
