Australia's first organised race meeting was held in Hyde Park in Sydney, in October 1810.  Land at Randwick was allocated for a racecourse in 1833 and the first race recorded at the new course at Randwick was between two horses in June, 1833.  This racecourse was known as the 'Sandy Course' and regular racing was held there until 1838 when the track had deteriorated to the point that it was used for training purposes only.  The Australian Racing Committee was formed in May 1840  to establish a system of racing.  The Committee had evolved into the Australian Jockey Club by January 1842 and the racing headquarted in New South Wales were at the Homebush Course until 1860.  Racing resumed at Randwick on 29 May 1860.  6,000 people attended the course which had a grandstand seating 700.
