PRODUCTION

Notes

Ron Muncaster designed the costume for his partner Jacques Straetnans to wear in the 1992 Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras parade. Ron also designed a twin costume for himself based on the same exotic Arabian Nights theme. He works the design through in his head rarely using drawings and it evolves in the making as he experiments with the design and materials. Ron has no training in design or the making of costume so works very much on a trial and error basis. He is constantly on the outlook for new materials that he can incoporate in his costumes and in particular ones that will support the elaborate and often enormous size of his forms. Haberdashery and hardware shops are favoured haunts not only for materials but also for inspiration as the starting point for many costumes has been an interesting material he has found. Made by Ron Muncaster. The Mardi Gras costumes often take months to complete and are elaborate in both their construction and finish. They involve a lot of handwork and considering they are only worn one night and are only fleetingly observed in the parade they are strongly made and finished down to the last sequin. The design for the costume was conceived in 1991 and construcution took place over 1991-1992. It was worn in the 1992 Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras parade.

HISTORY

Notes

Worn by Ron Muncasters partner Jacques Straetnans in the 1992 Mardi Gras. Ron and Jacques have been entering the parade together since 1986. Ron usually made Jacques the heavier more elaborate costume as he felt he was physically stronger.
