Outfit (7 pieces), womens, wool/felt/leather, Sonia Rykiel/Bally, France/Switzerland, 1986. Olive green woollen knitted four-piece outfit with matching hat and two-tone green shoes. -1/1. Jumper: hip length, tight fitting jumper with long sleeves and roll neck made of olive green machine knitted wool. Deep ribbing at hem, cuff and collar. Unlined. -1/2. Neck tie: short narrow matching tie made of same machine knitted wool. -2. Jacket: mid-thigh length, loose fitting jacket made of same olive green wool. Long sleeves with shoulder caps and deep V-neck. Two patch pockets at left and right front at hip level. Ribbing around hem, cuffs and down centre front opening that fastens with four green plastic buttons. Two belt loops at side seams waist (no belt). Two shoulder pads covered with same wool. Unlined. -3. Skirt: mid-calf length narrow A-line skirt slightly gathered onto a narrow waistband made of olive green wool jersey. Narrow frill around hem and two inset pockets at left and right side seams at hip level. Left side seam opening fastens with zipper and one brown plastic button on waistband. Machine sewn and unlined. -4. Scarf: wide scarf made of machine knitted olive green wool. -5. Hat: small sailor's-type cap made of olive green felt. High rounded crown with sharply turned up brim that has been stitched in horizontal rows. Brim has a 'V' cutout on right side and is decorated with a bow of olive green petersham ribbon. Unlined. -6. Shoes: pair of court shoes made of pale olive green leather with brogue-style leather overlays of dark olive green leather at the toe and heel. Punched hole decoration on these overlays and around edge of shoe. High slightly shaped stacked leather heel, lined with beige leatherette and inner sole of the same. Sole of dark brown leather. -6/1: Left shoe. -6/2: Right shoe.

Sonia Rykiel b 1930. Based in Paris. Signature clothes are made of soft knits and jersey. The shoes are designed and made by Bally International in Switzerland.

HISTORY

Notes

Jill Hickson is the wife of Neville Wran, premier of New South Wales between 1976 and 1986. During her husband's term Jill Hickson was International Relations Manager for Qantas Airways and undertook a MBA. She was also actively involved with various organisations such as the United Teachers Association, New South Wales Conservatory of Music and the Sydney Opera House Trust. This outfit was worn during the Royal visit in 1986. Purchased at Georges, Melbourne.
