'Devilish chaos' bowl by Toots Zynsky

Object No. 96/16/1

This glass bowl, with lead crystal threads (filet de verre), is entitled 'Devilish chaos' and was made by the American artist Toots Zynsky in her studio in Amsterdam in 1995. It is one of a series inspired by Zynsky's experiences living in Europe. It was most probably made for the exhibition 'Toots Zynsky - Recent chaos' from which it was acquired and was part of her 'Chaos and order' series. Working with hundreds of fine threads of mulit-coloured Venetian glass in black, orange, yellow, pale pink and icy blue, the threads of glass are laid side by side to form strips of one colour. Each of these strips is then overlaid, one on top of another at different angles, to create a patchwork effect so that Zynsky's approach is more like a painter. After arranging the threads she fuses them and slumps the resulting flat form in a kiln, a technique she developed in 1982.
