Physical Description

Top hat and box, mens, silk/cardboard, worn by Hon Justice Wilfred Dovey, bought from Hunts of George St, maker unknown, England, [1945] Black silk plush top hat with tall crown flaring slightly towards the top and trimmed with black felt hat band. Narrow brim with upturned edge trimmed with black grosgrain, the underneath is covered with black cotton fabric. The hat is lined with cream silk and the hatband is made of tan fake leather, it has two lengths of cream ribbon threaded through punched holes and tied in a small bow at centre back. Handwritten inside on headband, 'Dovey'. Printed in black on lining of crown: 'EXTRA QUALITY/HUNTS/hatter/314, George/Street./SYDNEY./MADE IN ENGLAND'. The oval hatbox with lid is made of cream cardboard and is covered with dark red textured paper with a trim of black around the bottom edge and the top edge of the lid. There is a sheet of paper glued to the top of the lid: 'FROM R. HUNT & CO PTY LTD/SHIRT MAKERS, TAILORS, HOSIERS, AND HATTERS./W. R. DOVERY, Esq., KC/174 Phillip Street, SYDNEY./314 GEORGE STREET, SYDNEY, N.S.W.'.

'Made in England' printed on hat and hatbox. Name of maker unknown. Made in c. 1945 and used up until c. 1960.

HISTORY

Notes

Used by the Hon Justice Wilfred Dovey. The hat was made in England to be sold in Sydney by R Hunt & Co Pty Ltd of 314 George Street Sydney (in c.1945). It was purchased by Justice Wilfred Dovey and then passed on to his daughter Margaret Whitlam (m Gough Whitlam 1942).
