'Surge Arrestor' powerpoint

Designed by Nielsen Design Associates for HPM Industries this device was one of the first products to receive the Powerhouse Museum Selection in 1992 as part of the Australian Design Awards. Still on the market in 2006, it uses an innovative audible and visual warning for surge protection of electronic equipment. This device is an example of the work of Nielsen Design Associates, one of Australia's oldest industrial design consulting firms. Established by Carl Nielsen in 1961, the group has developed products for a broad range of industries, from telecommunications to medical devices. This surge protector represents the increase in domestic use of computers and other sensitive electronic equipment in the 1990s.

Used to protect computers & other electrical equipment against electrical surges (ie thunderstorms). Takes extra voltage a surge can generate & transfers that to earth. Received an Australian Design Award and Powerhouse Museum Selection 1992. Nielsen Design Associates, established by Carl Nielsen in 1961, was one of the first industrial design consulting businesses in Sydney. In 1985 Carl's first employee David Wood, became a director of the group along with senior designers Sandy McNeil and Adam Laws. in 2005 David and Sandy were the group's directors. From a studio in Hunters Hill, Nielsen's ten designers develop products for a broad range of industries, from telecommunications to medical devices. About half their work is for clients outside Australia, mainly in Europe and Asia.
