Writing set, 'Wedgwoods Patent Manifold Writer', paper/card, R Wedgwood and Sons, England, c.1870. The set is made up of a folder, a blotter, a booklet of carbonic paper and two copy books. The folder is made of cardboard covered with brown and pink marbled paper and with dark brown leatherette spine and corners. The front cover is made up of two sheets of cardboard and a paper gusset creating a pocket. The title on the front cover is in gold printed on a brown leatherette square in centre of page, 'BY ROYAL LETTERS PATENT/WEDGWOOD'S/HIGHLY IMPROVED/MANIFOLD WRITERS'. Inside front cover printed in black on green paper, 'WEDGWOOD'S/HIGHLY IMPROVED/PATENT MANIFOLD WRITER', a sketch of a writer being used and testimonials from happy customers. Inside back cover printed in black on green paper 'DIRECTIONS FOR ARRANGING THE PAPERS TO PRODUCE A LETTER/AND ITS COPY AT ONE OPERATION...'. Same instruction in French. Inside spine there is a pocket for pens and a length of brown tape for use as a bookmark. The blotter/guard is a sheet of white cardboard printed in one side with an all over blue geometric pattern with a small sheet of white paper glued to the centre. Printed in black on the paper: 'DIRECTIONS FOR USING WEDGWOOD'S/PATENT IMPROVED/MANIFOLD WRITER.'. A booklet with a sewn spine and dark brown thick paper cover, glued to centre of front cover a small sheet of white printed paper: 'BY ROYAL LETTER PATENT/WEDGWOOD'S/IMPROVED/CARBONIC INK/PAPER.'. Contains a number of pages of thin white paper interleaved in these are sheets of black carbon paper. Two identical booklets. Sewn spine with white printed cardboard cover, printed with all over blue geometric pattern, glued at centre a small sheet of white paper printed in black: 'BY ROYAL LETTERS PATENT/WEDGWOOD'S/IMPROVED/COPY BOOK.'. Contains pages of thin white paper. Inside front and back covers are ruled tables with headings across top: 'FOLIO. DATE. NAME AND ADDRESS. FOLIO. DATE. NAME AND ADDRESS.'.
