Drawings for Myer Emporium by Fred Ward
Object No. 95/109/1-11
Drawings, Myer Emporium Ltd In 1931 Fred Ward was asked by Myer Emporium Ltd to open a modern furniture department. Myer believed that a market existed for contemporary designed furniture, fuelled by the trend in modernist design. Ward worked for Myer until 1940, when the Second World War called upon the services of many of the designers in the studio including Ward who left to join the Air Force. Following the War Ward attempted to reunite his design team, but most of the original designers wanted to establish their own design practices. This series contains some of Ward's more expressive furniture designs. There is a good collection of 27 original design drawings, mostly pencil works on drawing paper, designed specially for clients of the Myer Emporium. Drawings are stylised drawings which place the furniture in an interior setting. These drawings are not dated but most probably were drawn in the 1930s. There are also diazo photoprints and blueprints of furniture drawn by Ward after the War. These were probably done by Ward on a contract basis for Myer.
