Light fitting designed by Walter Burley Griffin

The work of Walter Burley Griffin relates to a wide range of late 19th and early C20th design modes, including Frank Lloyd Wright, and the international arts and crafts movement. Griffin and his wife played an important role in bringing new and individual desgin ideas to Australia, and specifically to Sydney in the 1920s throught the Castlecrag development.

Light fitting, wood / fabric, designed for Dwelling Number One, 136 Edinburg Road, by Walter Burley Griffin for his Greater Sydney Development Association, Castlecrag, New South Wales, Australia, 1922

Physical Description

Dark brown painted wood, with two parallel supports for square low pitched 'roof like' structure fitted near one end of the supports, which are exposed from the 'roof' by 170mm. A fixed crossbar and a moveable crossbar are attached to the other end of the supports.

The light fitting was designed by Walter Burley Griffin, Sydney, New South Wales, in 1922. It was designed for the houses of Griffins company the Greater Sydney Development Association.

HISTORY

Notes

This light fitting was one of three surviving originals in 136 Edinburg Road, Castlecrag, "Dwelling Number One" of the Greater Sydney Development Association, Griffin's company, which used it for offices when land and homes were being sold at Castlecrag. After almost 70 years of residential occupation it was purchased at auction by the Historic Houses Association of NSW in January 1993, in order to assist its preservation by eventual resale with one light in situ, replacing the other two with replicas.
