Summary

Physical Description

Table, 'Gello', PVC/polystyrene/metal, Marc Newson/3 Suisses, Australia/France, 1994. The unassembled table comprises three parts: (-1) The table top, a flat circular sheet of vacuum formed transparent [polystyrene]. The outer edge angled down. A hole cut in the centre. (-2) The table base, a flat "C" shaped form in concertinaed layers of transparent red coloured high frequency welded PVC plastic sheet. Intended to open out and circle back on itself to create a waisted, mushroom shaped form which when opened reveals a honeycomb structure in the connections of the layers of plastic. Clear plastic press studs on the outermost layers secure the two ends together when closed. (-3) A length of plastic tubing, shaped into a circle with a small collar or tube of metal holding the two ends together. It is used to secure the table base internally The object was housed in a plain, flat white cardboard box. This was disposed of when object was catalogued.

PRODUCTION

Notes

As a mail-order product the table needed to be ultra lightweight and easy to assemble. Newson designed the table in three very simple parts, choosing a high frequency welded PVC plastic sheet for the base, a piece of plastic tubing to hold it together and a vacuum formed polystyrene for the top. 3 Suisses is a French mail order company, the largest in Europe. It commissions many of its lines from some of the worlds leading designers. The "Gello" table is one of its new designs for 1994. It is produced in 4 colours, blue, green, red and transparent. For Newson, the experience of working with 3 Suisses represented a new opportunity, a new way of working. It was the first time he had been commissioned to design a cheap product for a mass market.

HISTORY

Notes

Marc Newson used the table as a demonstration model. He brought it over from France to Sydney during his visit in July-August 1994.
