HISTORY

Notes

This letter was found on a shelf in the Registration Department in 1992. Its provenance is unknown. As the letter was addressed to H.C. Russell, Government Astronomer, it is likely that it was transferred to the Museum from Sydney Observatory. Hargrave worked for Russell as extra observer (astronomical) at Sydney Observatory from 1879 to 1883. Following his resignation from the Observatory, Hargrave remained friends with Russell and often wrote to him re his aeronautical experiments. The letter may have been transferred to the Museum prior to the Museum's taking over the Observatory - eg. some photos of Hargrave's models and Hargrave carrying out experiments at Stanwell Park were transferred in 1961 (see Trust minutes, 28 August 1961 p.244) or the letter may have been discovered at the Observatory after the Museum gained control of it in 1983.
