Summary
Physical Description
Charging machine, metal, used at Eastern Suburbs Crematorium, Woodall-Duckham Pty Ltd, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 1937-1938. The charging machine was designed to receive coffins through the 'holes in the wall' to the chapels and then be wheeled along the tracks set into the concrete floor to the furnaces. The machine is on four wheels which run at 90 degrees to its length. Its base looks like the superstructure for a solidly built workbench table. It is fabricated from steel up to 15mm thick. The top section has four sets of rollers which, when manually operated via a handle at the side, facilitate the loading of coffins from the chapel wall-opening and the off-loading into the furnace.
