Physical Description
Silvered brass patera, sides slightly concave to rounded edge; metal incised band around top half of bowl with repeat design of [dragons], birds; in well, in high relief, the infant Hercules strangling the snakes (OF). Patera, from the Roman specimens discovered at Hildesheim. Infant Hercules strangling the snakes. Height 2 1/2", diameter 8 3/8" (LC). The Hildesheim treasure:- Hercules patera, 1874 / 313 (SB).

Elkington / Victoria and Albert Museum stock number 313-1874 The original Elkington catalogue entry reads 'PATERA. The bottom is repousse in high relief with the infant Hercules strangling the snakes; the insed of the rim is chased with floral scrolls, birds, and animals. From the Roman original discovered at Hildesheim in 1868, and now in the Berlin Museum ......Messrs. Elkington and Co. Silvered and parcel-gilt...'
