Boots (pair) and packaging, '505', leather, Blundstone Pty Ltd, Australia, 1992. Pair, unisex, very dark brown leather, pull-on ankle length style with elasticised side gussets and reinforced, rounded toes. Top stitched detailing around vamp, gussets and back heel, the boots feature cotton tape loops at front and back ankles plus thick textured synthetic soles and low moulded heels. Makers mark on sole and insole. Printed paper swing tag, folder style attached to the rear right boot strap. (-1) Right shoe (-2) Left shoe (-3) Shoe box, plain brown corrugated cardboard covered with white paper printed in black and orange, folded construction with flip up lid.

The elastic sided boot first appeared on the market in the 1830s when J. Sparkes Hall made a pair for Queen Victoria. They were at first made for evening wear in silk satin and for day wear in cotton and linen. Being practical and comfortable style they have recurrently appeared as a popular style for both men and women. In the 20th century they have also become a work boot with a reinforced toe and heavy duty leather construction. The movement of clothing styles from workwear to fashion has many historical precedents, ie jeans, smocks, trousers, Hard Yakka, R.M.Williams. (information taken from justification on blue file) Blundstone Pty Ltd is one of the longest established footwear manufacturers in Australia. It is the only Australian footwear manufacturer to have its own tannery, producing specialised leathers for farm boots, bushwalking and industrial safety footwear. The Blundstone 505 elastic sided boot was originally conceived as a comfortable hard wearing work boot but has in recent years become a fashion statement among the young in Australia and Europe. It is now their most popular line. The Blundstone factory in Hobart is backed by some of the most sophisticated manufacturing plant available, such as computer stitching, injection vulcanising and polyurethane technology. The company have moved from their traditional base - the rural sector into the industrial market with safety capped footwear. This reflects the growing awareness that specialised safety workwear needs to be worn in some occupations. note on blue file
