Summary

Physical Description

Film costume consisting of red and black flamingo style dress and pair of red dancing shoes. Flamenco style dress with long tight fitting bodice with a sweetheart neckline and low cut back. The bodice is made of red machine made lace with cornely work in red braid. It is decorated with red sequins and gold glitter like sparkles, the front and the back have a design picked out in black tubular and bugle beads plus black sequins. Red cording crosses over the open back. The long sleeves are of doubled red chiffon and are sparsely decorated at the wrists with red sequins. The skirt is made up of layers of red crystal nylon which is trimmed with black braid over fishing line to create a stiffened ruffled effect. The short skirt has a long train a the back made of more ruffled layers and falls to mid-calf length. The top layer of the skirt is sparsely decorated with glued on red diamantes. Centre back zipper fastening with a small metal hook and thread work eye. Pair of red fabric covered strappy shoes with a high heel that is covered with red diamantes. Red diamantes decorate the toes of the shoes and they fasten with a small metal buckle.

Notes

The costume was designed by Angus Strathie who graduated from the National Institute of Dramatic Art in 1988. He has since worked with the Canberra Theatre Company and the Australian Opera. His designs for 'Strictly Ballroom' are based on the costumes worn by real competitive ballroom dancers. The dress was made by Angus Strathie's mother to give it a 'home made look'. The shoes were made by Steppin' Out.
