'Dunlop Perdriau Motor Tubes' poster
Object No. 92/1391
This poster advertising the 'Dunlop Perdriau Motor Tubes' exemplifies the increased popularity of automobile imagery throughout the 1920's and highlights Dunlop's pre-eminent position in the Australian automobile accessory industry at this time. Dunlop entered manufacturing in Australia during the 1920s, bringing with it tyre making expertise not available to local makers. The practical invention of the pneumatic tyre by Dr John Boyd Dunlop in the UK boosted the rubber industry worldwide. The variety and frequent harshness of Australian road conditions led local tyre manufacturers to research, design and develp tyres for automobiles, motor cycles and bicycles with the necessary resilience. As market leaders within the local automoble accessory industry, Dunlop heavily promoted their products through the use of price lists, posters and pamphlets, emphasising quality and durability. Dunlop merged with the Perdiau Rubber Company in 1929 and in parnership, they were able to build on Perdiau's reputation and obtain market leadership.
