Gas generator, metal/wood, William Quirk/Modern Lighting Ltd, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 1909-1920 The main body of the generator consists of a steel drum mounted laterally on a base and surmounted by a rectangular box and miniature gasometer, all painted green. A wooden handle and winch are attached to one end of the drum. The winch cable connects to two compound pulleys and seven cylindrical weights.

Quirk's Victory Light Co. was established by Linden or William? Montague Quirk and formerly traded as W.M. Quirk & Co. It became Quirk's Lighting & Engineering Ltd in 1912 under Linden M. Quirk, Sir James Graham, John Hain, John Stinson and Thomas Waddell. The firm was later run by Eric Dudley Quirk. By 1922 the company was trading as Modern Lighting Ltd of Kippax Street, Sydney. Quirks made an usual gas lighting plant, the 'Light of Australia' which Quirk patented in 1907.
