'Boa' lace neckpiece by Silvia Fedorova
Object No. 2002/85/2
"Boa" was a finalist in the 2001 International Lace for Fashion Award but was excluded from the judging because, although it uses a traditional bobbin lace technique, the fabric itself has no spaces. Its role in the exhibition was to draw attention to the fact that it is the spaces in the fabric which make it lace, not the technique. Fedorova is a very important artist from a part of Europe which has valued and encouraged contemporary lace practice for almost a hundred years. Early last century in Eastern Europe, particularly Czechoslovakia, traditional bobbin lacemakers were encouraged to re-develop their skills as a means of self-expression. They began with wall panels which drew on folk legends and pictorial subjects and progressed to abstract wall panels and three-dimensional sculptural pieces. By degrees their work transcended the traditional techniques to become as valid a medium of artistic expression as any other. The entries from the Czech republic and Slovakia are particularly inspiring. They show the kind of innovation, seen in their art lace for almost a century, now returned to fashion. It is particularly noteworthy that students at such a prestigious institution as the Academy of Art, Architecture and Design are still encouraged to use and develop the contemporary expression of traditional lacemaking skills.
