'Sehaliah' top and bag by Gloria Valli

This outfit was displayed in the exhibition of finalists in the Powerhouse Museum's second International Lace for Fashion Award. In the ninetteenth century Russian lacemakers pioneered the technique of plaiting using only four threads which can follow any complex design prividing that there is an even number of lines at every intersectiooon. This dramatically reduced the time needed to work the background of large-scale domestic laces, and consequently kept the price of such work at a reasonable level. Valli uses this technique to great advantage at a time when hand made bobbin lace must evolve in a very innovative and timesaving way if it is to compete in the fashion context.

Physical Description
Top and bag, "Sehaliah", bobbin lace/ red and blue coated copper wire, Gloria Valli, Italy, 2001 "Sehaliah" is a set of three wearable pieces made from 5 identical rectangles of copper wire lace, each measuring 200 x 400 mm, four blue and one red. The red rectangle is worn under one blue rectangle, both being moulded to the body to make the bodice (front only.) The sleeves and bag are each made of a blue rectangle. All pieces are held onto the body in a very minimal way with clear synthetic rubber 'boot laces.' The bobbin lace techique used for the lace involves plaiting only two pairs of threads along a single complex pathway, using special hooked connections called 'sewings' wherever the design lines overlap. The red rectangle has a design of overlapping circles which form a repeating pattern of flowers, each with six purved petals. The blue rectangles have a tessellated design of interlocking eight-pointed star shapes, each with an open centre.
