Portrait of model Penny Pardey in Pierre Cardin mini-shift

Object No. 91/1907

At the time that this photograph was taken, Henry Talbot was in Paris on an assignment for the International Wool Secretariat. It was there that he captured two Australian models - Penny Pardey (later Penny Campbell-Bruce) and her friend Judy O'Connell. Both models had been chosen by Pierre Cardin during his trip to Australia at the invitation of the Australian Wool Board in 1966 (or early 1967) when Cardin invited them to travel to France to work as house models for him in Paris. Talbot knew Penny Pardey back in Australia, so while he was in Paris he took the opportunity to meet up with her and capture her and her friend Judy wearing Cardin's trailblazing mini-shift and coat on the back streets of Paris at night. Pardey later recalled that the mini-shift she's wearing in the shot with the scooter, was one which all Cardin house models wore when they weren't modelling particular garments from Cardin's seasonal range.

HISTORY

Notes

Cardin visited Australia at the invitation of the Australian Wool Board to promote both his designs and use of Australian wool. Peter Thompson produced a film about this visit titled 'Cardin in Australia'. The film won two Australian Film Institute awards, Best Documentary and Best Editing for a Non-Feature Film, in 1967. A paragraph in the 'Talk about Flair' column (Flair June 1967, p.55) makes reference to Penny Pardey and Judith O'Connell: 'We were thrilled when Pierre Cardin selected two of Flair's favourite models to invite back to Paris to model for him: they were Judith O'Connell, whom you saw on our March cover, and Penny Pardey, who was Cover Girl last November (1966). Although we'll miss their bright shining faces, we do feel this is an opportunity of a lifetime and wish them all the very best.' 'Talk about Flair' (Flair July 1967, p.64) also mentions Penny Pardey and Judy O'Connell: 'Sharing the limelight on pages 32/33 (Flair July 1967) are two 'look-alike' models, Penny Pardey and Judith O'Connell, who took off for Paris to work for Pierre Cardin last month: both have been swotting up on their French ever since they got the job, hope to fit in some photography work in between showings … apparently they're what Frenchmen regard as 'typically Australian', and were chosen to make a contrast to the petite European and Asiatic girls already working for Cardin. We're sure they'll create quite a stir over there!' Earlier, Judy O'Connell had been identified as one of 'Flair's Top Ten models of 1966' (Flair December 1966 p.40-41) along with Liz Ford, Sue de la Motte, Jan Stewart, Carolle Clements, Nerida Piggin, Jackie Holme, Nerida Piggin, Ana Nilsen, Georgia Gold and Veronika Rossmanith. A paragraph in 'Talk about Flair' (Flair March 1967) talks about how Kevin Lambess, fashion co-ordinator at Anthony Hordern's Sydney, discovered Judy O'Connell and other models (Yve Stewart, Mimi Dixson and Tana Goldstein) who all worked as Hordern House models before going on to achieve their own success.
