Sheedy Pty Ltd Signwriting Archive

Object No. 91/1892

This collection of advertising designs and signwriting tools were made and used by Sydney signwriting company Sheedy Ptd Ltd from 1942 to 1981. This collection is important because it documents a Sydney business that ran for many decades, from 1908 through to 1982. The material reflects both changes in the company itself, as well as changes in design and advertising during this time. The signwriting tools are also a reminder of past technology that has changed dramatically with the introduction of computer technology. In addition, many of the advertising designs in the collection belong to large companies, such as Woolworths, Coco Cola, and EMI.

HISTORY

Notes

These advertising designs and signwriting tools were made and used by Sydney signwriting company Sheedy Pty Ltd who traded, under various names, from 1908 to 1982. This signwriting company was established in 1908 and traded as Pitty, Sheedy and Dollar from 1908 to 1919, then from 1920-1936 was known as Sid Sheedy, and from 1928-1940 as the Sheedy Sign Co. From 1941 the firm was known as Sheedy Bros. until a dissolution of partnership created Sheedy Pty Ltd in 1946. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, the words 'Craftsman Displays' was used as a trading name. Sheedy Pty Ltd moved c. 1940 from their address at 630A George St, to Redfern, first to 182 then 293-5 Abercrombie Street. The company advertised its products and services variously as Signs and Displays; Signwriters and Designers; and Painting, Signwriting and Displays. Its work ranged from small sign and lettering jobs to billboards, parade floats and displays for Home Exhibitions, which were popular in Sydney in the 1950s. It also carried out house painting in suburban homes and designed murals for prestigious clients such as the Hotel Australia. Many of its clients were large companies, such as Woolworths, Coco cola, Orlando Wines and Anthony Horderns, for whom it did work for many years.
