'Australia' poster

'Australia' poster

Object No. 90/58-1/32/3

Douglas Annand was commissioned by The Australian National Travel Association to design posters for the purpose of attracting overseas visitors to Australia. To Annand's surprise, one of these posters, this elegant poster design depicting a black swan, was entered into an international competition in 1968, without his knowledge. The poster won a bronze medal at the 7th International Poster Competition organised by the Provincial Office of Tourism in Milan. It appears Annand only heard about the result by accident. This poster is one of a series of works in the Annand archive (90/58), which contains copies of posters designed by Annand, correspondence from the General Manager of the Australian Tourist Commission apologising to Annand for not informing him of the poster's success, three watercolour designs for a proposed poster for the Australian Tourist Commission, and photographs of the black swan poster taken by Max Dupain. The Australian Tourist Commission was established in 1967. It took over many of the Australian National Travel Association's former functions. Douglas Annand had previously designed many posters for ANTA, and some of these continued to be used and reprinted by the Australian Tourist Commission into the 1970s.
